Montreal based Alexi Hobbs has built a solid reputation as an editorial photographer but it his more personal work that has drawn our interest. There are several series on his website that deserve attention, our focus is on “instincts and convictions” for the emotional depth that these images exude.
Alexi shows us a gallery of images that, at first, seem unrelated and unfocused. Further examination reveals a stream of solitude and his attempts to connect with his environment and others in his life. There is a subtle longing that permeates the series, accompanied by a search for a simple aesthetic that we find very pleasing and uncomplicated. His captured environments are warm, even in the coldest of climates. There is a passionate, almost melancholic, approach in composition and lighting. One can’t help but want to know more about the subjects he shoots and his relationships to what he sees.
