Calgary born, and classically trained dancer, Jeremy Fokkens came to photography through a natural desire to define the world through his eyes. And, having travelled to over 50 countries, we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to see Jeremy’s world, as it is one that is sometimes hard to look at, but wholly engaging and hopeful.
Browsing through the galleries on his website, one feels the connection Jeremy has with his subjects. The people and places he photographs may be third world, existing in conditions few have witnessed first hand, but the overall impression one gets is not one of pity or shame. Jeremy has a deft hand at balancing awareness, pain, and joy in his images that leave the viewer with a complete picture. Too many times photographers limit themselves to the negative aspects when shooting in unfavorable environments, so to his credit, Jeremy has sought out a more realistic vision of life so that we, too, can feel that life is not reduced to a single emotion.
